Hey everyone! It was a crazy (June 21st) and good week and I only have 6 more days in the Portugal Porto mission... next week I will be emailing you from the Lisbon Portugal Mission! Crazy to think actually! But cool that I will have served in two different missions! Which also means I'll be getting a new mission president. I am super excited though! Anyways here was my week...
19 de Junho, We started off with a District Meeting in the morning. Which always means 3 hours on the bus to Santarem, there and back. Then had no luck knocking doors!
20 de Junho, Sorry aha but I forgot to write in my journal this day! First time since the MTC!
21 de Junho, Oh boy, another classic story.... umm well it started when we knocked on a woman's (She is like 80) door and we basically taught her at her doorstep but... during the lesson she asked if she could show us something and well yeah... she just pulled up her shirt and had nothing on under her shirt. That was a great new investigater. Then lunch at a member's house. Then we walked up a hill to knock some doors for real houses. We knocked one door and what happened, well a young girl, probably about 17 or something, came out in just her underwear and said that we could come in and teach her. We told her, "We will return and teach your whole family another day." So yeah, we left there quickly. Then we had our final interview with our mission President through a skype application called Zoom. And then we passed by one of our other new investigater's and she was only wearing a towel and a sports bra so we said we would come back another day when she wasnt as busy. Just a whacked out crazy day.
22 de Junho, Awesome day. Basically only did one thing and that was our final Zone Conference with our Mission President! It was awesome. And I understood everything that was being said, and when we sang church songs the Spirit was just so strong! It was kinda sad, I will miss President and Sister Amorim! They were the ones to welcome me to Portugal and have been so kind and generous to me! It was also good to see lots of missionary friends like my boy Elder Howard from the MTC!! Love that guy!
23 de Junho, We taught our investigaters Daisy and Santinho, but other than that kind of a boring day! Just gettin shut down! But who doesn't like that?
24 de Junho, We had church in the morning which was great! Then lunch at the house of Irma Louisa. Then straight to work. We took a bus, then a train to a city called Azambuja. The train station was like a ghost town. My companion told me it reminded him of the Walking Dead hahah! But Azambuja was great, we made plans with lots of people to return latter in the week and also taught one man, Filipe! Ended up being a great day!!
That was basically my week. Yeah it was dope.
Cool story from this week is that one night we asked our President to work one hour later and he said yes soooo... We went around putting signs up around the city about free English lessons! In a couple Saturdays I will be begin teaching English lessons. I will be the main teacher but my companion knows a lot, so we are basically the main teachers. Even though he tells me every day that I have to teach it. Anyways, we attached our number on the flyers and have got a couple calls already. It will be members of the church and non members! We put the flyers up in the dark so that people might not see it was us who put them up hahah!
My challenge this week would be a great help for me and make me super happy. My mission President (Presidente Amorim) just spent the past three years of his life away from business (he is a huge buisness man) and he spent those years literally running the Church of the northern half of Portugal. The man is amazing and I really respect what he has done here. It would mean lots to me if you could send an email to manoel.l.amorim@gmail.com
Just thank him for the service he provided here in Portugal these past three years! Oh and probably start "Hi I am ..... A friend-aunt-whatever of Elder Parks Layton......" That way he knows how you know of him! He is fluent in English, so its all good.
Portuguese is way better for me, every day I get so much better now!! It's just the best to actually understand and talk to people finally without too much difficulty.
Anyways have a great week, tchao.
